Independents' Day 2006

The Whitehall Roman Villa: Conference and AGM at Bugbrooke, Northampton

Saturday September 23rd 2006

The Whitehall Roman villa is one of the most impressive excavations of a Roman Villa by an independent Group, headed by Steve Young, a lecturer at the University of Northampton.

The project has now been expanded with the help of a grant from the Local Heritage Initiative to study seven parishes by field walking. This project is called CLASP - the Community Landscape & Archaeology Survey Project

Independents Day will first consider the results of the fieldwork survey, and hear about the success of the their approach to “Community Archaeology”, where they are effectively encouraging professionals and volunteers to learn new skills and put them into practice. Then in the afternoon there will be a conducted walk round their Flagship Site at Whitehall Farm, directed by Steve Young and look not only at the villa and the early round house, but also at the exciting Saxon finds.
