Independence and Research

Congress of Independent Archaeologists, Cirencester, 10th to 11th September, 2005

The Congress centred on a practical review of what is happening in the field.

There will be two keynote speeches, from our Chairman, Andrew Selkirk, and then from our own Neil Faulkner (Seen regularly in Time Team, The Roman Big Dig and other TV programmes); he will be outlining his vision for the future of Independent Archaeology. There will be time allocated for questions and comments from the audience.

Geophysics will be dealt with in depth, Bob Randall will be there to demonstrate a pre-production Magnetometer and discuss with us future developments. The response from the 2004 British Archaeological Award participants is excellent and I am sure we shall be enthused by the excavations carried out by our members.

The Congress dinner on Saturday night should be a highlight with Arthur Price attending as Guest Speaker. Arthur is the son of Eddie Price a living legend in independent archaeology. In his own right, Arthur’s speciality is stone mining – everything from researching their locations, exploring, rescuing tools and artefacts etc. He is a consultant employed by architects, estate agents and Gloucester Cathedral. How often do we find masonry in an excavation and wish we could trace its source?
